I was wondering if anyone charges an advertiser or does something to make money with a tool bar?

Toolbars are a "marketing" tool not a money making device.

The success depends on what you put on the toolbar.

The reason I asked was that someone called me and wanted to buy a link on my tool bar.  The site they have is great and would make a good site to have on the bar anyway.

I don't see why you couldn't sell advertising space on your toolbar. It's not a bad idea.

How much do you think is a good price to charge and advertiser to have their site mentioned in a message you send out to all your toolbar users. Would you charge based on installations or on active users, and how much would you charge per 1,000 you reckon.

Well, here's what I did.

I charged $400 per month to be on the main row and they are helping promote the tool bar.  Then I charged someone else $200 to be on a drop down, they also have to help promote it.

It's a start.  I do not tell them how many people have the tool bar, instead they get publicity from helping to promote it.

Legal to make money using your toolbar...

Sure it's legal, what laws are you breaking. If you want to charge someone for a bit of advertising space on your toolbar by all means go for it. The hardest part is finding advertisers that are willing to advertise on your toolbar in a way that won't annoy the toolbar users. That said to really spark any interest with advertiser your toolbar needs to be relevant to a topic and really should have quite a few members. I have had a few people approach me to advertise on my toolbar offer to pay $xx.xx for a mention in a message that I have sent out to users - but I have 5000+ installations so far so they get a fair bit of exposure.

You guys are doing very well, I don't intend to get money from my toolbar but and extra buck or two wouldn't be so bad. Do you guys go to major companies and write them a letter? I'm not sure where to start. I know a couple radio stations, do you think they would be willing to advertise?  Huh

I normally just mention the toolbar to the current advertisers I have on my other sites, and a couple seemed to be interested.

Sorry to interrupt, but I have a different point of view. Your discussion is good on how to monetize your toolbar by selling an 'ad space' on your toolbar.

That is a good amount of money for a small toolbar!

What I am going to say is: put your affiliate links on the toolbar that you create. So, anytime the user click on the toolbar button, your affiliate link will be functioning and you will get paid for it. The best thing about Effectivebrand toolbar is: the affiliate links is hidden! They could not see your affiliate id. BUT, you need to really have a toolbar with a very specific theme for the affiliate program that you have. Don't throw in just any link on the toolbar, as the user can 'sniff' your affiliate links and get your toolbar uninstalled.

I did it with mine and currently get more referral from the toolabar for my affiliate links. Although I still have not receive any profit from the referral link, but I believe that the more they download and install the toolbar, the higher the probability for them to buy from your affiliate links from the toolbar! It's a numbers game!

This is pure GENIUS!!!
I use affiliate links on my website to promote all kinds of related products/sites but I never thought about putting them on the bar.

One major worry I had about my bar is that (with the way I have put so much of my best site content on to it [radio, etc.]) it makes my users linger on my site a bit less. And I was worried that that would make them click on ads less too. But if I put the best related affiliate links on the bar then I have it made in the sun!!!

Thanks for this post!

No Google ad may be placed on pages published specifically for the purpose of showing ads, whether or not the page content is relevant.

I would imagine that this also refers to the toolbar.
